Chairs of House 9/11 Commission Caucus Disappointed That Intel Conference Will Not Finish Bill Before Election |
Reps. Shays and Maloney say potential issues raised in House debate have materialized |
WASHINGTON, DC - Reps. Christopher Shays (R-CT) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), who introduced the Collins-Lieberman legislation in the House and co-chair the bipartisan 9/11 Commission Caucus, today expressed their disappointment that an intelligence reform bill apparently will not make it to the president’s desk before Election Day. Noting that strengthening the nation’s security cannot wait, they released the following statement:
“When the House was considering a bill divergent from the Senate version and the commission’s recommendations, many of us warned that it would bog down security reform. It seems that those concerns were well founded. For security’s sake, our nation needed quick action on the commission’s most important recommendations. What we got instead were extraneous provisions and spotty negotiations. The American people deserve better. “We know that this is a real disappointment to the members of the 9/11 Family Steering Committee, who have fought so long and hard to form the 9/11 commission, to get it funded, to get it extended, and to get these reforms done. We know that they will not stop until America is safer, and neither will we.” ### |
