"Matt Glavin is using a dishonest scheme to raise money for a dishonest cause," Maloney stated. "This mailing shows the depths that partisan opponents of the Census Bureau will stoop to in order to stop a fair and accurate census. I applaud the Postal Inspection Service for moving quickly to protect the integrity of the 2000 Census by ordering Mr. Glavin to halt his deceptive mailings."

Maloney further noted that Glavin would almost certainly face prosecution under a law recently passed by Congress which goes into effect April 12, 2000. The Deceptive Mail Prevention and Enforcement Act [39 USC 3001(i)] prohibits deceptive mailings designed to resemble official government documents. The bill was passed specifically to prevent groups like the SLF from tricking recipients into opening solicitations by disguising their mailings as official government documents.

"Matt Glavin was saved from prosecution by a legal technicality," Maloney added. "But nothing can save the opponents of a fair and accurate census from the reality that all Americans deserve to be counted in the 2000 Census."
