Education

Responsibility for educating our children is not a power delegated to the federal government in the Constitution. This power rests exclusively with parents, local school districts, and state legislatures.

        • The No Child Left Behind Act places policy-making authority in the hands of bureaucrats in Washington and costs taxpayers billions of dollars each year.

        • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act needlessly spans two whole books of the United States Code and covers over 300 pages in the Federal Code of Regulations.

        • State legislatures should have the opportunity to vote on whether or not to accept the dollars and strings associated with federal grant programs.

        • I have introduced H.R. 1857, the Local Control of Education Act to give state legislatures the opportunity to accept or reject policies in No Child Left Behind. State could tailor their own education policy, accepting some programs under No Child Left Behind and rejecting others, creating a mutual agreement between the states and the federal government on education.

        • Thomas Jefferson said, “That all powers not delegated to the United States, by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States or to the people. To take a single step beyond the boundaries thus specifically drawn around the powers of Congress, is to take possession of a boundless field of power, no longer susceptible to any definition.”
