Mental Health: Culture, Race, and Ethnicity - Report from the Surgeon General

Striking disparities in access, quality and availability of mental health services exist for racial and ethnic minority Americans. The suicide rate among American Indians/Alaska Natives is 50 percent higher than the national rate; rates of co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse (especially alcohol) are also higher among Native youth and adults. Because few data have been collected, the full nature, extent and sources of these disparities remains a matter of conjecture.
