These are the BEST and the TABE. We end up using the TABE for adult ESL students on the high end who have maxxed out the BEST. I would agree that it is not an appropriate assessment tool in many cases. It may be useful for some students who have the long-term goal of achieving the GED since the academic skills tested the TABE are relevant for these students. However, we have a group of advanced ESL students in an EL Civics class for whom the TABE is not relevant. Fortunately, this group is a small percentage of our total students. So we give the test to meet the demands of the funders and then move on to meet the needs of our students. I hope this is helpful.
