Dear Tanya,

I hear your anger at being a fulltime-partimer. I
think most people on this listserv understand and
support your anger. I agree with your statement that
this is no reason for the government/funders to take
advantage of the generosity of adult educators,
because I certainly don't see K-12 teachers putting up
with such treatment. I also don't see Susan or
Elisabeth saying that not giving partimers benefits
and retirement etc. was fair. If anything, Elizabeth
was clear in pointing out that it was their loss when
they lost good teachers because of the lack of
benefits.

I see this as systemic, in that the funders (and the
government) counts on the kindess of teachers and the
fact that they cannot organise is a huge disadvantage.
I've seen programmes where teachers have left halfway
through the term because they found jobs with
benefits. And finding a replacement was not hard. It's
the classic scenario where there are always teachers
who can/choose to work without benefits. So the demand
is met. In the meanwhile, making a career in adult
education becomes harder and harder.

regards
Ujwala Samant
