Just a short note to invite listserv
members to check out the keynote presentation
from April 5th's KATESOL Spring Conference,
at Fort Hays State University. The theme
was "Transitions: One Student at a Time,"
and the speaker was Dr. Socorro Herrera,
along with students from K-State's BESITOS
program, doing readings from their impressions
as immigrants who have come up through the
public schools and are now preparing to become
teachers themselves. I hope you enjoy the
streaming video, following the links from
http://www.fhsu.edu/katesol/video.htm .
When you click on the link, your RealPlayer
will open the approximately 65 minute video,
which begins with FHSU Special Education/ESOL
Chair Art Hoernicke's welcoming remarks and
introduction for Socorro Herrera, who in turn
introduces the five students. The other link
is to a video of a roundtable from the same
event, where ESOL Endorsement Program Directors
from five different Kansas universities joined
a representative from the Kansas State Department
of Education in discussing the needs of schools
and teachers today in Kansas, a state where the
number of ELLs in public schools is growing at
three times the average rate for the rest of the
United States.

Thanks,
Robert Bruce Scott
Assistant Professor of Special Education/ESOL
Fort Hays State University
Vice-President, KATESOL (2003-2004)
