Dear Melanie,

In June the Commonwealth of Virginia issued its Assessment and Reporting Policiies for Adult Education and Literacy Programs.  This included a list of standardized ESOL assessments tools approved by the state for reporting purposes.  The TABE is not one of them because it was not intended for non-native speakers and never has been validated for that population.  Before some programs were using it for advanced students but it is an inappropriate tool for them also.

It is a shame that the program mentioned by Laurie Ketzenberg  at Temple University had to be canceled because of the misuse of this otherwise excellent assessment tool and because of the lack of awareness by some policy makers in the difference between native and non-native English speakers.

Hello Everyone,
My name is Melanie Hamper and this is my first time using the list.  I am a
graduate student of TESOL at Madonna University in Livonia, MI.

I am having difficulty finding anyone who uses the TABE for Adult ESL
programs.  If anyone does use the TABE for their program, I would be very
grateful to get your opinions about how useful it is to you.  Help!!  I am
doing a comparison between the TABE and the Adult LAS for my final project
in Testing/Assessment of ESL students.

Thank you.

Melanie
TESOL grad student
