How do you feel this impacts their writing development over time? Any
signs of change? Are the letters kept in a collection?

I teach high beginner adults. Rather than dialog journals, I write
each student a letter when he/ she starts the class. In the letter I
invite the student to write to me (outside of class) if s/he wants to
and has time. Because many of my students work, I don't want it to
seem like a bad thing if they don't write. A relatively small number
write and we correspond during the semester but those who do enjoy it.
