Hi,

I am pleased to announce the three winners of 2003 Mini-Grants from the ESL Special Collection. Each winner receives $500 and the winning project is posted on the ESL Special Collection for dissemination nationwide.

The goal is to develop a curriculum resource that teachers can use to help them plan student-centered lessons around using the telephone. The curriculum is not meant to be a series of isolated lesson plans, but rather a guide to help teachers address the skills and strategies their students need for all telephone conversations. It will include ideas for lessons that build up learners' skills towards the effective use of the telephone. It will also include tools that teachers can use for pre and post assessments, goal setting, rubrics for evaluating roles plays, worksheets and sample activities. Listening activities will also be recorded and made available for download from the internet. A bibliography of recommended resources will be included. The materials will be easy for teachers to use, easy to customize for different classes and easy to prepare.

Operation Read will be developing 12 Internet Activity HELP CARDS for use with low level ESL Learners. The project is designed to foster more successful opportunities for low level learners in their explorations online. The first copies of these HELP CARDS will be available in Spanish/English. The HELP CARDS will provide picture and simple text navigation for some beginning experiences with online resources. The HELP CARDS will be laminated and made available in our computer labs. Copies for learners will also be provided in print form for home and other site practice. The cards will be available in a print format on line at our web site (opread.org) and on the ESL Special Collection (www.literacynet.org/esl). Other translations of the cards are planned. The HELP CARD model has been used by Operation Read to support learner practice with various software programs and general computer tasks (Power Point, labels, digital camera use). The first model cards were developed with the Wallace Grant Initiative which Operation Read received in collaboration with the Lexington Public Library (Lexington, Kentucky) from 1997 through fall of 2002. The model cards have encouraged students that are anxious about working in software or computer tasks to feel and perform with more confidence.

Jay's Adventures Across the United States: Tutors and learners from our program will take Jay, a laminated paper doll, on a tour of Charlottesville.
They will document this project with pictures (Jay will be in some of them) and make mini-albums of their tours. These trips will showcase events and tourist
spots in the Charlottesville area. Jay will be mailed along with "A Guide to Charlottesville" to another ESL program in the United States. The receiving party
will produce their mini-albums, and mail the final product and Jay to other ESL program across the United States, thus helping Jay travel the United States by
postal mail. All mini-albums will be uploaded onto our website and will serve as virtual visits to each city/town that Jay has visited.

Please visit the ESL Special Collection at www.literacynet.org/esl.

Peace,
