The theme was "Transitions: One Student at a Time," and the speaker was Dr. Socorro Herrera, along with students from K-State's BESITOS program, doing readings from their impressions as immigrants who have come up through the public schools and are now preparing to become teachers themselves. I hope you enjoy the streaming video, following the links from http://www.fhsu.edu/katesol/video.htm . When you click on the link, your RealPlayer will open the approximately 65 minute video, which begins with FHSU Special Education/ESOL Chair Art Hoernicke's welcoming remarks and introduction for Socorro Herrera, who in turn introduces the five students. The other link is to a video of a roundtable from the same event, where ESOL Endorsement Program Directors from five different Kansas universities joined a representative from the Kansas State Department of Education in discussing the needs of schools and teachers today in Kansas, a state where the number of ELLs in public schools is growing at three times the average rate for the rest of the United States.
