Hi,

The series Pro Care was developed by the Literacy Program of the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County. It's a very good series for teaching ESL in the context of nursing education. There are several different books within the series, and each has a teacher's manual.

You can order the materials at the California Literacy bookstore at: http://www.caliteracy.org/resourcesreferrals/bookstore/index.cfm

Peace,
Matthew Scelza

Shelly,

We have a lot of students in the same situation. We teach ESL to the Advanced level, but it is still quite a jump from there to a Nursing program. I imagine that it is quite common- health Aide, CNA and LPN job are abundant and not always desirable to Americans, so many immigrants end up in this field.
I'd really like to see anything you find, especially self-study material.

Dear Shelly,
We have access to a book called Nursing in a New Language designed specifically
for ESL learners who have obtained basic knowledge of English grammar and an
English vocabulary of about 1,000 words. It is not to teach nursing but to help
in mastering adequate English language skills to work in an English-speaking
environment and communicate with English speaking patients.
Please let me know if you would like to learn more about this resource.
Sincerely,
