Wexler Votes to Protect Gays and Lesbians in the Workplace
Employee Non-Discrimination Act Passes House

(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) voted for the Employee Non-Discrimination Act (H.R. 3686), legislation that revises workplace anti-discrimination laws to include protections for gays, lesbian, and bisexual Americans.

“I am proud to be part of this landmark change to our civil rights laws,” Congressman Wexler said.  “No American should have his or her job security threatened because of his or her sexual orientation and the inclusion of gay and lesbian Americans in our workplace protection laws is long overdue.   It is extremely important that Congress always strive to ensure that all Americans are treated equally under the law, and I am pleased that this important change was made.”

Currently, it is illegal for an employer to discriminate against a worker on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicapping condition, martial status, or political affiliation.  The Employee Non-Discrimination Act revises current non-discrimination law by prohibiting discrimination against an individual on the basis or actual or perceived sexual orientation and provides an exemption for religious organizations.

Congressman Wexler is Chairman of the Europe Subcommittee and a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Judiciary Committee; and he also sits on the Financial Services Committee.
