Wexler Introduces Resolution Recognizing 5 Year Anniversary of Iraq and Calling for Withdrawal of US Troops

(Washington, DC)  Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs introduced a strongly worded resolution recognizing the fifth anniversary of the disastrous Iraq War and called for an immediate and safe redeployment of US troops from Iraq.  Wexler’s resolution recognizes the enormous cost of the Iraq War on US troops, their families and the entire nation, citing the almost 4,000 US soldiers who have lost their lives, the over 39,000 wounded servicemen and women, and the recent report by The Washington Post indicating that the war is on schedule to cost American tax-payers at least $3 trillion.  Wexler’s resolution also expresses his strong support for Congress to withhold additional funding for the President’s war in Iraq and criticizes the Bush Administration for failing to provide proper care for thousands of American troops returning home from battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Finally, the Wexler resolution expresses strong Congressional support for American service members who have sacrificed greatly in Iraq.

“President Bush’s misguided decision to go to war in Iraq in March 2003 has led to the most significant foreign policy disaster in the history of this nation. On the fifth anniversary of this misguided war, it is clear that American troops must immediately and safely be redeployed from Iraq.  I believe my resolution expresses the deeply felt concerns of the American people who want Congress to stand up to the President and cut off funds for a war that has left close to 4,000 soldiers dead, over the 39,000 wounded and has cost over $500 billion dollars,” Congressman Wexler said.   "It is time for Congress to address the escalating costs of this disastrous war, which has destroyed America’s credibility globally, weakened our ability to deter terrorism and overstretched our military. Given our faltering economy, we can no longer spend hundred billion dollars a year in Iraq without undermining our ability to address the growing recession that is squeezing millions of middle class Americans. "

The resolution is available for viewing here.
