Title IX: Women and Sports |
In addition to ensuring equality in all aspects of education for girls and women, Title IX has been instrumental in opening the doors of locker rooms and sports stadiums. While I join a majority of Americans in supporting Title IX, the Bush administration engages in continuous efforts to rollback this policy. On June 6, 2006, I wrote to the Department of Education expressing concern over changes to Title IX compliance standards that severely threaten women’s access to equal opportunity in sports. I have also cosponsored legislation aimed at protecting Title IX and increasing gender equity in publicly funded athletic programs.
Thanks to Title IX, today’s young women are able to compete for championships and scholarships both in the classroom and on the field. It is important to ensure that Title IX remains an effective tool for gender equality.
