Oil and Gas Royalties
Introduction | Press Releases | Legislation | Documents

We cannot continue to rely on Big Oil to satisfy our energy needs. Rather, we must focus on conservation and alternative energy sources that will keep our planet cleaner. The oil and gas industries have a long history of shortchanging taxpayers, and I will continue to fight against efforts to rob the American people and the U.S. Treasury of oil and gas royalties.

I worked with former Representative Stephen Horn (R-CA) as Ranking Member of the Government Reform Subcommittee on Government Management, Information and Technology to fight for the taxpayers' fair share of oil royalties. In August 1996, I released a report that showed that oil companies owed more than $2 billion in unpaid Federal oil royalties nationwide, and I immediately urged the Department of Interior and the Department of Justice to investigate the oil companies’ pricing scheme throughout the country. I also investigated Department of Interior royalty settlements, and sought to reform the government's role in this process.
