Roadless Area

After receiving extensive public input, the Forest Service has issued a final environmental impact statement for roadless area conservation.  For more information and status, link to the national website for Roadless Areas Conservation Proposal.


The Roadless Area Conservation Proposal means that no roads or trails will be closed. Link here for more detailed information about how the proposal will affect the Mark Twain National Forest.

Inventoried Roadless Areas
totaling 25,000 acres or 2% of
Mark Twain National Forest

In the 1970s, the Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) process identified areas that met minimum criteria for consideration under the Wilderness Act of 1964. After the RARE II study, and some lands were managed for multiple uses, meaning road construction was allowed in those areas. Areas that were not inventoried are categorized as "unroaded" lands.
