I am the coordinator of an Even Start Family Literacy = program in Chicago. Family Literacy is a strong and important focus for = both the Illinios Secretary of State's Office and the Illinois State = Board of Education through Even Start. There are many very thoughtful = and dedicated people in those offices working to strengthen Family = Literacy services in the city of Chicago, suburban areas and down state = Illinois and it shows through the quality programs helping families = throughout the state! Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending the IASA conference in = Chicago. This is the statewide conference for TITLE programs. I = attended on Thursday because it was publicized as being *Family Literacy = Day.* And, indeed, there were many excellent sessions focused on = Family Literacy. However, I had expected that the special Keynote = Speaker, Joseph Johnson, the Director of Compensatory Education Programs = in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education would discuss Family = Literacy. I was surpirsed that he did not talk about Even Start or even = mention Family Literacy. It seems to me that any discussion about = improving schools and educating children must include families and = family literacy. Furthermore, I believe that Mr. Johnson had been asked = by the organizers to talk about family literacy.=20 The lack of mention of family literacy by Mr. Johnson, a federal = representative plus the recent budget proposal cutting Even Start = funding raises serious concerns about the future of family literacy. =20 I would really like to encourage dialogue on this listserv about this = crisis. I wonder if we can't move to change the direction the federal = government is moving in before the families most in need of our services = pay the consequences. Please respond!
