Moore announces federal funding for history education

(WASHINGTON, DC) -- Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District -- Kansas) today announced $661,650 in federal funding for the Olathe School District from the Department of Education’s Teaching American History Grants Program.

“I am pleased to see the federal government helping Kansas schools continue to make education a high priority,” Moore said. “This grant will promote learning and academic achievement and help maintain the tradition of excellence in our public schools. I thank the teachers and administration of the Olathe School District for their hard work and dedication to our children.”

Teaching American History grants support projects to raise student achievement by improving teachers’ knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of traditional American history. Maureen Donegan will oversee the program for the Olathe School District.

The Olathe School District, which currently serves over 23,000 students, will use this funding to provide twenty history teachers for grades 7-12 with quality instruction in historical content and pedagogy from University of Kansas faculty members in American history in five semester-long seminar courses. The teachers will also learn in a hands-on two-week summer workshop where they will have the opportunity to access the library resources and archives of the Kansas State Historical Society, the holdings of the Kansas Museum of History, and the archives of the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas.
