Moore thanks summer 2005 interns

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District—Kansas) today commended his 2005 summer interns on the successful completion of their summer internships.

“I am grateful that these young people volunteered part of their summers to intern in my offices,” Moore said. “The work they do, interacting with constituents as well as government agencies, provides an invaluable service to the people of Kansas and helps my office be even more responsive to the people I represent.”

Interns in Moore’s Washington, D.C., and district offices are typically responsible for researching current issues, responding to constituent concerns, and giving general assistance to the staff whenever it is needed.

Moore’s 2005 summer interns include:

Johnson County

Kathleen Carey, of Overland Park, will receive her degrees in Spanish and international studies from the University of Kansas in May 2006. Carey helped with constituent services work during her internship in Moore’s Overland Park office.

Aaron Dekosky, an Overland Park native, currently attends the University of Kansas pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business and international relations. He has enjoyed extensive community service efforts and plans to study law.

Doug Dorando, currently residing in Leawood, is a student attending Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. His current focuses are in political science, women’s studies, and theatrical sound and lighting design. Dorando, the secretary for the Cornell College Democratic Chapter, is also active within the theatre department.

Lara Portnoy is a 2004 graduate of Blue Valley North High School currently completing her second summer internship in Moore’s Overland Park office. She attends Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, and is the daughter of Dr. Jay and Ellen Portnoy of Overland Park.

Chloé White is a native of Mission Hills. She also served as a campaign intern in the summer of 2004. A recent graduate of The Pembroke Hill School, White will be a freshman this fall at Washington University in St. Louis. She plans to study political science and international relations. She is the daughter of Jerry White and Cyprienne Simchowitz.

Jason Gallagher, an Olathe resident, graduated with honors from Shawnee Mission South in 1999. His internship was in partnership with the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) summer intern program. Gallagher spends countless hours advocating for the rights of people with disabilities to live independently in the community, including taking time off school to lobby at the statehouse in Topeka. Currently, he is a board member on the Statewide Independent Living Council of Kansas. Gallagher is a junior majoring in political science at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri.

Sarah Marberg, of Leawood, is currently a student at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. A 2002 graduate of Blue Valley North High School, Marberg will complete her bachelor's degree in political science in May 2006. She is the daughter of Wendy and Bill Marberg.

Meher Talib, of Leawood, graduated from Blue Valley North High School in 2004. Talib is currently attending the University of Southern California where she plans on majoring in philosophy and international relations. She is the daughter of Javid and Dr. Nasreen Talib.

Stephanie Zable, of Leawood, currently attends Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where she is majoring in political science. She is a 2004 graduate of The Pembroke Hill School and the daughter of Noah Zable and Robin Kramer.

Douglas County

John Benjamin, of Lawrence, is a student at the University of Kansas, where he majors in economics. Benjamin is a graduate of Lawrence Free State High School.

Scott Konzem is a Lawrence native and Lawrence Free State High School graduate currently attending Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He is majoring in international relations and classical studies and will graduate in June, 2006. Konzem previously interned in Moore’s Washington, D.C., office in the spring of 2004.

Adam Schwartz, a Lawrence resident originally from Dallas, Texas, attends the University of Kansas, where he is majoring in communication studies. He interned in Moore’s offices in Lawrence and Kansas City, Kansas.

Sarah Shapiro, a Lawrence resident, currently attends Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, expecting a degree in sociology in May 2006. She is the daughter of Sidney and Joyce Shapiro. She interned in Moore’s Overland Park office.

Other Kansas interns

Christopher Dinkel, of Victoria, Kansas, currently attends Pomona College in Claremont, CA, where he studies international relations and politics. Dinkel, a junior, also participates in Model United Nations and tutors local high school students. He is the son of James and Shirley Dinkel.

Katie Hill, of Alma, Kansas, attends McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas, where she majors in history and political science. She is currently completing her second internship in Moore’s Washington, D.C., office, and she is the daughter of Allen and Dorinda Brucken.

Out of state

Sarah Feld, a St. Louis, Missouri, native and Olathe resident, graduated with honors from Rosary High School in 2001. Currently, Feld is a senior at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri majoring in marketing.

William Wake of Chicago is currently studying political science at Kansas State University and plans on graduating in May 2006. Wake is involved in Young Democrats of America and Students for Environmental Action.
