FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Two New Television and Print Series for Family Literacy and Adult Education

PASADENA, Calif., October 2, 2002 – The producers of Crossroads Café and
On Common Ground have developed two new television series for family
literacy and adult education programs. Madison Heights and Lifelines use
drama and documentary to present stories of families struggling to improve
themselves and their position in the larger community.

“It is fabulous! I'm overwhelmed”, said Gail Graham, Director of the
Freedman Parenting Centers in Aiken, South Carolina. “These series will do
wonders to get the community more involved in family literacy.” The
Freedman Parenting Center is featured in the Lifelines episode 'My Brothers’
Keeper' which tells the true story of Shari Philpot.

Shari’s story is all too common. A former gang member, she was awarded full
custody of two younger brothers at age 16. Survival suddenly required her
to work three jobs while going to school and taking care of the home front.
With the help of a teacher and a counselor at her high school, Shari began
to see education as her way out. She enrolled at Freedman and went on to
complete her last remaining high school course in 17 days. She now works as
a tutor at the Center and is taking classes at Aiken Tech Community College.

Closely integrated print materials support both television series and
include a rich array of exercises and activities that help adult learners
improve their ability to read, write and speak; communicate more
effectively; and provide experiences that empower them in their roles as
parent, worker, and member of the community. The dynamic interplay between
the television and print materials motivates learners to continue their
studies and achieve their goals.

Nine State Education Agencies, the United States Department of Education,
and INTELECOM Intelligent Telecommunications developed Madison Heights and
Lifelines as a way to bridge the gap that exists between the growing number
of low literate adults and the ability of traditional programs to serve
them.

Both Madison Heights and Lifelines have been cleared for immediate broadcast
by public television stations. Family literacy and adult education programs
are encouraged to contact their local PBS station or community access
channel to schedule broadcasts of Madison Heights and Lifelines in
observance of National Family Literacy Day - November 1. Local stations can
also take advantage of new family literacy PSAs created by the National
Center for Family Literacy in conjunction with the Ad Council. These
high-quality PSAs are designed to attract targeted adults to family literacy
programs and can be aired in conjunction with the Madison Heights and
Lifeline broadcasts.

The videotapes and print materials in both series are available for
classroom and distance learning use. For information regarding broadcast,
pricing and availability of Madison Heights and Lifelines, or to request
free preview materials, please contact INTELECOM, (800) 576-2988, extension
112 or 116. Or visit www.intelecom.org.

To order copies of the PSAs for Family Literacy, please call Hartford Direct
at 1-800-933-PSAS. For more information about National Family Literacy Day
