Have them put their family before this issue, their children before this issue. During parenting one wears the Parent Hat. See if there is a way you can turn it into a learning situation: how they can help their children work through a similiar situation. We all run into people we don't care for, but we often have to work with them. How does one do that successfully? Also, be certain to establish ground rules for parent group and for your program. Have all the students make the rules and agree to them. Follow the rules In family literacy, or any classroom, one can have rival gang members or divorced couples, etc. One needs to work out ways to deal with disagreements. I would also suggest that you look at the Equipped for the Future information onResolve Conflict and Negotiate. I have a problem with two of my students. One, a male, has a very distinctive name, and another student, a female, has found out that the first student is also in the program (we offer services through a variety of adult ed providers, so they don't see each other through the adult ed). I need to get the parent group going, but I don't think I can put these two together! We don't have enough students at this point to allow us to have two parent groups, so how do I accomodate both of these students? By the way, I did NOT ask for details, and I have not told the male student about the female student being in the program. Thanks! ===== Colleen Angaiak Even Start Coordinator Literacy Council of Alaska 1949 Gillam Way Fairbanks, AK 99701 Phone: 907/456-5013 Fax: 907/456-1657 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
