In light of our recent discussion of teacher preparation in the area of
parent engagement and family literacy - I thought these comments from
Elizabeth Link, a reading specialist here at NCFL might spark some further
discussion.

Let us know what you think.

By the way...the Bats are a triple A baseball team (affiliate of the
Cincinnati Reds) here in Louisville and "Dancin' Carl" is a stadium
attendant who demonstrates his "American Bandstand" moves at every game.

Subject: Link to Reading

 Consider these points from Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young
Children (1998) by the National Research Council, (p. 332):

"Programs that educate early childhood professionals should require mastery
of information about the many kinds of knowledge and skills that can be
acquired into the preschool years in preparation for reading achievement in
school. Their knowledge base should include at least the following:
  a.. information about how to provide rich conceptual experiences that
promote growth in vocabulary and reasoning skills;
  b.. knowledge about lexical development, from early referential (naming)
abilities to relational and abstract terms and finer-shaded meanings;
  c.. knowledge of the early development of listening comprehension skills,
and the kinds of syntactic and prose structures that pre-school children may
not yet have mastered;
  d.. information on young children's sense of story;
  e.. information on young children's sensitivity to the sounds of language;
  f.. information on young children's understanding of concepts of print,
and the developmental patterns of emergent reading and writing;
  g.. information on young children's development of concepts of space,
including directionality;
  h.. knowledge of fine motor development;
  i.. knowledge about how to instill motivation to read.
TERMS defined:
directionality- anyone who has been to a Bats game knows Dancin' Carl's
dance epitomizes the ability to perceive spatial orientation accurately!
lexical development- includes understanding word meaning as contrasted to
understanding grammar or syntax

Sincerely,
