This is not accurate information. I am a school board member for our local
school district and have been given a synopsis of the legislation and it's
funding by our Title I coordinator. It shows Even Start funding at EXACTLY
the SAME as last year. Someone needs to check their info.......

In a message dated 2/8/02 1:10:29 PM Central Standard Time,
tpeyton@famlit.org writes:

<< “I was concerned to learn that the President’s budget included a $50
million
reduction in Even Start funding,” said Sharon Darling, >>

The above is a quote from the NCFL PRESS RELEASE posted to the NIFL-family
listserv.

Perhaps we are all in shock about this devastating news, and that is why we
have been silent for several days on this listserv.

Those of us who work in Even Start programs know from our own experience,
observation, and program-specific assessment how much families can benefit
from our programs. This is true even for those of us who serve the "hardest
to serve"--including teen mothers, victims of domestic violence, substance
abusers, and people who move in and out of homelessness.

One question I have had all along is how valid the assessment of Even Start
has been up to now. It will be interesting to see what happens now that
states are beginning to implement their own assessment based on their own
performance indicators, as mandated.

For right now--what specific action should we, as Even Start providers, and
even non-Even Start family literacy providers, take? Obviously, we can
start
by contacting our own representatives in Congress. We can write to the
president. Whom else should we contact?
