Family literacy activities are a stated priority of the Community
Technology Centers program and we encourage family literacy programs to
apply.

The Community Technology Centers program is administered by the US
Department of Education for the purpose of assisting eligible applicants
create or expand access to information technology and related training
to disadvantaged residents of economically distressed urban and rural
communities.=20

An absolute priority of the Community Technology Centers program is to
fund projects that provide adult education, including adult basic and
secondary education instruction, language instruction, and family
literacy activities. Projects awarded grants are expected to use
technology to improve learning outcomes, rather than simply provide
individuals with access to technology.

The deadline for applications is July 19, 2002. Applicants are
encouraged to submit a notice of intent no later than June 28, 2002.

The estimated range of awards is $75,000 to $300,000. The estimated size
of awards is $180,000. The department estimates it will award 83
projects. The project period is up to 12 months.

Community Technology Centers are authorized by Title V, Part D, Subpart
11, Section 5511 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965
as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (20 USC 7263).
