Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP)
Program Description
The NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP) attempts
to reach a culturally diverse group of promising graduate students
whose research interests are compatible with NASA's programs
in space science and aerospace technology. Fellowships provide
an annual stipend and are renewable, based on satisfactory progress,
for up to 3 years. Underrepresented minorities and women are
encouraged to apply.
This program supports approximately 300 graduate students each
year. An applicant must be sponsored by a faculty advisor or
his/her graduate department chair. Awardees may not simultaneously
accept any other Federal fellowships or traineeships.
Each year approximately 90 new awardees are selected based on
competitive evaluation of their proposal and academic qualifications.
NASA's scientists competitively evaluate students and their
proposals based on the student's academic qualifications, proposed
research, and plan of study. Fellows selected by NASA Headquarters
conduct research at their respective universities.
Students applying for a center fellowship are strongly urged
to contact the relevant NASA Program Administrator prior to
developing a proposal.
The Dryden Flight Research Center program includes most engineering
disciplines in aeronautics with emphases on flight systems integration
and flight dynamics. The following list identifies the current
activities relevant to the Dryden program for which qualified
students may apply:
- Advanced Digital Flight Control
- Aerospace Education Research
- Flight Systems
- Flight Dynamics
- Flight Test Measurement and Instrumentation
- Fluid Mechanics and Physics
- Integrated Test Systems and Aircraft Simulation
- Multidisciplinary Modeling and Simulation of Advanced
Aerospace Vehicles
- Propulsion/Performance
- Structural Dynamics
Students interested in a Dryden fellowship may contact the Dryden
GSRP Officer for detailed descriptions and updates of relevant
research activities.
Program Objectives
- To cultivate additional research ties to the academic
community.
- To support promising students pursuing advanced degrees
in science and engineering.
- To make significant contributions to the Nation's aerospace
efforts.
Eligibility Requirements
Individuals may apply for this program if they meet the following
requirements:
- Be a full-time graduate student (or accepted for full-time
study) at a fully accredited U.S. college or university.
- Not be concurrently receiving other Federal funds, including
that from other Federal fellowships, traineeships, or Federal
employment.
- Be a U.S. citizen.
Application Process
Proposals for the GSRP must be written by the student. Students
applying for a fellowship are urged to contact the relevant
NASA GSRP Program Administrator prior to developing a proposal.
Applicants should submit the following materials:
- An original and five (5) copies of all research proposal
materials to each Center program office for which consideration
is sought.
- A proposal cover sheet with the appropriate university
officials' signatures.
- An abstract describing the objectives of the plan of study
or proposed research.
- A description of NASA facilities and resources the applicant
wishes to use in support of proposed research.
- A short biographical sketch of faculty advisor and a letter
of recommendation (completed by the faculty advisor) on
behalf of the student.
- A 12-month budget containing the following:
- Student stipend of $16,000.
- Student allowance of $3,000.
- University allowance of $3,000.
Deadlines
Applications are due in early February each year. Award notification
is in early May.
