Greetings Family Literacy list serve members,

We are pleased to announce that Dora Irma Villarreal Maury, an adult
education teacher from Mexico, will become part of the National Center
for Family Literacy family at our headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky,
this summer. Ms. Villarreal will join NCFL staffers on July 12th and
remain in Louisville for three weeks. NCFL was invited to participate in
the Mexico-United States teacher exchange because of its work with the
Instituto Nacional para la Educación de Adultos (INEA)—Mexico’s adult
education program.
Ms. Villarreal has agreed to take part in the NCFL Summer
Institute, which is offered as “next steps” for those who want to enrich
their family literacy experience. The Institute features a variety of
workshops and is scheduled for July 21-23, in Louisville. Ms. Villarreal
will present a daylong workshop on Mexican culture and second language
acquisition on Tuesday, July 22, that will be invaluable to family
literacy providers serving Hispanic families.
The growing Hispanic population in our country and the high
percentage of that population that has not completed high school (64.9%
according to the Center for Immigration Studies) have prompted NCFL to
launch initiatives designed to help family literacy practitioners better
serve Hispanic families. Through its new Toyota Family Literacy Program
(TFLP), the Hispanic Family Literacy Institute (HFLI) and the
Mexico-U.S. teacher exchange program, NCFL will gain information about
Hispanic culture, its impact on Hispanic families and how to use this
information to support the language and literacy development of Hispanic
families.
Ms. Villarreal will enrich NCFL’s work in this area by giving us an
opportunity to learn more about second language acquisition in order to
develop workshops that promote teaching strategies that will impact the
educational attainment of Mexican and other Hispanic families. In turn,
Ms. Villarreal will learn about family literacy through NCFL orientation
sessions and visits to local programs.
In December of this year, as part of its continuing relationship with
INEA and the Mexico-U.S. Teacher Exchange program, NCFL will send a
staff member to Coahuila, Mexico, to promote the concept of family
literacy in Mexico.

Upon her arrival, Ms. Villarreal will sign up and introduce herself to
the list. This will give list members an opportunity to discuss Mexican
culture and any other topics related to families and education in
Mexico. NCFL hopes that this opportunity will help you better serve
families of Mexican origin in your Family Literacy programs.
