Moore seeks to clarify future of Sunflower lands

(OVERLAND PARK, KAN.) – Today Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District-KS) released a copy of his correspondence with John Petersen, lawyer to potential developers of the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant (SFAAP) regarding the details of land transfer between the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), Kansas, and the developer.

“I’ve been working on this issue since I was sworn into office in January 1999 and I am dedicated to ensuring that we protect the interests of all parties as we discuss the development of these lands,” Moore said. “After the Senate approved the Roberts/Dole amendment, there were no clear answers in the public record regarding the intended development of that land. I appreciate Mr. Peterson’s letter and assurance that the developer intends to provide public benefit transfers of land to the city of DeSoto, the DeSoto School District, Johnson County Parks and Recreation, the University of Kansas, and Kansas State University.”

On August 6, Congressman Moore sent a letter to John D. Petersen, a lawyer with Polsinelli, Shalton, Welte, Suelthaus, who represents the proposed Sunflower developer, Kessinger/Hunter. The subject of Congressman Moore’s letter focused on Sunflower development concerns including: public benefit transfers, potential federal law exemptions, and environmental cleanup and monitoring. John Petersen responded to Congressman Moore’s concerns in a letter dated August 20.

“John Peterson’s letter is a good first-step in the disclosure process to guarantee that the public interest is being met at Sunflower,” said Congressman Moore. “The transfer of 9,065 acres of federal land to parks, research, schools and new communities will significantly impact our lives in Johnson, Wyandotte and Douglas counties. I will continue to watch the transfer process to ensure it has the best interest of our communities at heart.”
