Here's an example of a health literacy program from El Paso Community College. The URL is http://www.worlded.org/us/health/docs/elpaso/fivestep.htm This program incorporates speaking, reading, and writing skills. I'm sure there's many more similar programs. Everyday for me here is a learning experience. Sharing ideas with other listserv members has given me a wide view of a topic and a project that I've been thinking about persuing. I'm considering an online ready reference to textbooks like "Spanish for health care workers" by Case and Chase or "Medical Spanish" by Jarvis and Lebredo. Also, I've been planning an online content driven set of Spanish lessons using "Medlineplus in Spanish" as the content. Several months ago a representative of Medlineplus gave me permission to use screenshots from the topics section. These projects could be used in hospitals and Spanish classes. I'd like your input. Maybe these projects have already been done and used in the health literacy. I'm like the fellow who jumped out of the window of a skyscraper. On his way down some asked him how things were going. He answered "So far so good." When he hit the ground a policeman ran up to him and asked "What's going on here?" And, the fellow answered "I don't know. I just got here myself." Well, that's me. I just got here. I really don't know what been discussed or what exists in the 'health literacy' field. I'd like to hear from you. Thank you very much in advance. Muchas gracias de antemano.
