Dreier Statement in Support of the Republic of Georgia
August 13, 2008
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) issued the following statement today regarding President Bush’s actions in support of the democratic government of the Republic of Georgia:
“I commend the President for his very strong words in support of our ally Georgia in the face of unconscionable Russian aggression and his decision to send humanitarian aid. We must make no mistake about this week’s invasion by Russian forces. It was nothing less than a naked attempt to thwart Georgia’s democratic ambitions and reassert control over the former Soviet republic. The U.S. stands firmly with our democratic allies.”
Through the House Democracy Assistance Commission (HDAC), Dreier has worked closely with the Georgian legislature in its efforts to strengthen the country’s institutions of representative democracy. The ongoing legislative strengthening program is part of larger efforts by the U.S. to encourage and support democratic reform throughout the globe.
“As Ranking Member of HDAC, I have had the chance to see first-hand the strong commitment of Georgia’s elected officials to pursue a robust agenda of democratic reform. We must continue to support the Georgian people in their endeavor to achieve lasting, prosperous and peaceful democracy.”
