The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder on the NASA s Aqua spacecraft was launched on May 4, 2002. The AIRS data are used for improving weather prediction, validating climate forecast models and improving the understanding of atmospheric processes related to clouds and hydrology and atmospheric composition.

Since its inception, the AIRS instrument has demonstrated exceptional stability and accuracy and has proven its value as a climate quality instrument. This means the data are stable and accurate enough to be used for trending climate indicators as well as used for understanding processes that affect climate.
