   Topics and Subtopics

Following the lead of the National Reading Panel (NRP), which conducted a comprehensive review of reading instruction research at the K-12 level (NRP 2000a, 2000b), the major research topics, or categories, selected for review are based on those components of reading found by the National Research Council (NRC) and others to be most important in learning to read: alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). After the topics were discussed among members of the RRWG planning committee, additional topics important to the field of adult basic education (ABE) were added to the core categories.
