Congressman Brown Co-Sponsors Measure Protecting Christmas Traditions

Resolution Supporting National Holiday Passes House

Washington, Dec 15 -

U.S. Representative Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC), today voted to pass H. Res. 579 Expressing the Sense of the House of Representatives that the Symbols and Traditions of Christmas Should be Protected. A co-sponsor of the measure, Brown urged his fellow members of Congress to show their support for this beloved national holiday.

"Christmas is a holiday that is celebrated by an overwhelming majority of Americans," Brown said. "The framers of our Constitution intended for the First Amendment to prohibit the establishment of religion, not to prohibit mention of religion or God. The desire to observe this holiday is not intended to offend anyone; rather it is intended as a celebration."

The resolution, which recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas and strongly disapproves of attempts to ban their use, was adopted by the House of Representatives today by a vote of 401-22-5.
