Ellsworth Request to Promote Economic Development by Restoring Alhambra Theater Approved

WASHINGTON - Living up to his pledge to disclose projects that are on track to receive federal funding, Rep. Brad Ellsworth today announced Congress has approved federal funds to restore the historical Alhambra Theater in Evansville. The $200,000 in funding was included as part of the FY 2008 Omnibus Appropriations measure approved by both chambers this week.

The funds were requested by the City of Evansville and will be used for the restoration of Alhambra Theater, the oldest historical theater in Vanderburgh County. The theater will be part of the Haynie's Corner Arts District, a 2006 City initiative to support Evansville businesses in the arts and entertainment field and promote economic development in deteriorating neighborhoods near downtown.

"Restoration of the Alhambra Theater can promote economic development and revitalize struggling neighborhoods in the downtown area," said Ellsworth. "I am proud to have supported this project, and I hope the President will sign the bill into law soon."

"We see the Alhambra Theatre as the center of Evansville's new arts district.  Its restoration will increase enthusiasm about the arts district and spur on new development in the surrounding area," said Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel.  "I would like to thank Congressman Brad Ellsworth for working to see that federal funds are designated to help bring the Alhambra back to its former glory."

The FY 2008 Omnibus Appropriations measure was approved by the House and Senate earlier this week. The President is expected to sign the bill into law.
