House Approves Ellsworth Request for USI Campus Perimeter Road System
WASHINGTON - Living up to his pledge to disclose projects that are on track to receive federal funding, Rep. Brad Ellsworth today announced he requested federal funds to construct a perimeter roadway and improve safety for pedestrians and motor vehicles at the University of Southern Indiana (USI). The $350,000 in funding was included as part of the FY 2008 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations measure approved by the House late last night.
The funds were requested by USI and will be used to construct a perimeter roadway to reduce traffic in the center of the USI campus and improve traffic flow from State Highway 62 and University Parkway. In addition, the project will result in improved intersections, wider travel lanes, pedestrian bridges and crosswalks to improve pedestrian and motorist safety.
"By making improvements to the transportation system around campus, these funds will help increase the safety of students and motorists at USI," said Ellsworth. "I am proud to have supported this project, and I will continue to work for federal investment to improve the transportation infrastructure and public safety of our communities."
"The redesign of the Campus Perimeter Transportation System will enhance pedestrian and traffic safety on the USI campus. We are very grateful for Congressman Ellsworth's efforts on behalf of the University of Southern Indiana," said USI President H. Ray Hoops.
Passage by the House is only the first step in the process. The bill will next go to a Conference Committee of House and Senate members who will work to combine both Chambers' bills in a Conference Report. Upon passage of the Conference Report by the House and Senate, the final bill will then be sent to the President to be signed into law.
