Ellsworth Bill Recognizing Correctional Officers Progresses to House Floor
National Correctional Officers and Employees Week May 6-12
WASHINGTON - A bill sponsored by Rep. Brad Ellsworth honoring the service of correction officers will be considered by the House tonight. National Correctional Officers and Employees Week is recognized May 6-12 this year.
"I spent an entire career working in law enforcement, and from my experience, corrections officers are some of our hardest working law enforcement professionals," said Ellsworth. "Today we recognize them for their important contributions to the safety of our communities."
The bill voices Congress' support for National Correctional Officers and Employees Week and "honors all correctional officers and employees for their service to their communities and States, and to the Nation." It also recognizes the vital role correctional facilities play in the U.S. criminal justice system. Ellsworth sponsored the bipartisan bill with Reps. Tim Holden (D-PA) and Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ). Together the three lead the Congressional Correctional Officers Caucus in the House.
"The men and women who work in our prisons and correctional facilities face danger in their daily lives," said Ellsworth. "Their role is critical, and yet, often goes unrecognized by the public. Hopefully this bill will bring some much-deserved appreciation for their work."
