Dreier To Inspect Fire Damage in California

October 25, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), Leader of the GOP Congressional Delegation, will be on the ground in California today with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and President George W. Bush to inspect firsthand the damage caused by the wildfires in California. Dreier and other Members of Congress are joining the Governor and the President so that they can ensure all necessary resources are available, and expedite relief and rebuilding efforts.

Today’s visit follows the Emergency Declaration issued by President Bush on October 23, 2007. The Emergency Declaration allowed federal resources to be sent to the frontlines of the fire. Dreier said the federal, state, and local officials have been working together extremely well in an incredibly difficult situation. "These fires have been unprecedented in scale, damage caused, and mobilization of relief efforts," Dreier said. "In many areas, the fires are still raging. Fire fighters remain in the field, working hard to gain control of an extremely volatile situation. The federal government has already dispatched fire fighting support in the form of planes, funding, and manpower. We will be receiving important updates about how the fight is progressing, and learn if additional support is needed."

Also this week, President Bush issued a Major Disaster Declaration. This declaration will help with the rebuilding efforts once the damage is assessed. Dreier said today’s visit will help every level of government assess how much assistance will ultimately be necessary. "It’s imperative that we see for ourselves the scope of the destruction so that we can ensure everything that is needed is available to those who need it. For those who have lost their homes or businesses, this is an incredibly difficult time. But the rebuilding must begin as soon as possible. And in the meantime, we will help them carry through until their lives are back to normal."
