Dreier Hails Formation Of New Unity Government In Iraq

May 22, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas,CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, issued the following statement on the formation of the new government in Iraq:

"Three times last year, the Iraqi people went to the polls and staked their future in the democratic process and a constitutional government. Their courageous votes ultimately led to the Iraqi unity government under Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki. I congratulate the government and all Iraqis on this tremendous accomplishment. This is a very positive step forward on the path toward protecting freedom and peace in Iraq. The new government representing all Iraqis will serve as a stark contrast to the violent insurgency and ultimately, help bring about the conditions for an eventual draw-down of U.S. troops.

"While there remain terrorists determined to derail democracy in Iraq, they will be met with the resolve of the leaders of the new Iraqi government, the Iraqi security forces, our military and millions of hopeful Iraqis. The United States will stand with the government and the people of Iraq to fulfill our common goal of a stable and democratic country."

On May 20, the Iraqi Parliament approved their new government under Prime Minister Maliki. Thirty-six cabinet posts were filled, with three remaining: the Ministries of Defense, Interior and National Security.
