Dreier Supports Bill to Honor Fallen Troops

May 9, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas,CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, voted today to approve legislation that will allow funerals of fallen service-members to proceed without disruption so that their families and friends will be able to honor them in peace. The Respect for Fallen Heroes Act, The Respect for Fallen Heroes Act, H.R. 5037, was approved with overwhelming bipartisan support, 408-3

"It’s beyond regrettable that this legislation has become necessary," Dreier said, "but unfortunately, some people have lost any sense of decency when it comes to honoring the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. Because protests across the country have disrupted funerals for fallen troops, this legislation seeks to ensure their efforts will now be in vain. In their darkest hour, the families of those who lose a loved one to war deserve gratitude and respect. This bill will help provide that to them."

Dreier is a co-sponsor of H.R. 5037, which prohibits any demonstration at military funerals at national cemeteries beginning 60 minutes before and continuing 60 minutes after the services. It further keeps protestors at least 500 feet from the mourners. The bill fully conforms with the parameters established by the U.S. Supreme Court in regulating the time, place, and manner of demonstrations, and is backed by numerous veterans organizations.
