Dreier, GOP Seek Debate on Solutions to Bring Down Price of Gas

April 23, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC - Rules Committee Ranking Republican David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) and his GOP colleagues are seeking today to have a debate on how to bring down the price of gas and address the concerns of working Americans. It’s been two years since Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised a “common sense plan” to lower gas prices, but to date no plan has been put forward and the price of gas has skyrocketed. The House GOP is offering a motion to force a debate in the House on how to bring down the price of gas and request Speaker Pelosi to unveil her “common sense plan.”

“The skyrocketing price of gas is affecting millions of Americans and we need to come together to provide some relief,” Dreier said. “Speaker Pelosi promised a plan to bring down the price of gas two years ago but we have yet to see it. We have a plan, and we want to debate it. We want to have environmentally sound exploration for additional resources. We want to build new refineries, which hasn’t happened in nearly three decades. We want to move to alternative sources of energy, like coal to liquid. We tried to do these things for years, but the Democrats stood in the way. Now that they’re in the majority, they refuse to debate our solutions, or offer any of their own. Americans need action to bring down the price of gas, not another round of empty promises.”
