Dreier Joins Glendora Students in
"Read Across America Day"

March 4, 2002

WASHINGTON - Taking part in the annual “Read Across America Day,” Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas) joined students at Glendora’s Stanton Elementary School this past Friday to celebrate the importance of reading for learning and fun. Dreier read the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham” to students because the celebration specifically commemorates the author’s birthday.

“Reading informs us, it entertains us and it’s fundamental to success,” said Dreier. “By dedicating a day to the value of reading, we can give students a respect and love for this valuable skill. There are few things more important than teaching our kids to enjoy a good read. I always enjoy visiting with local schools to participate in this exciting program.”

The National Education Association sponsors the nationwide event. Last year nearly 35 million readers of all ages took part in reading events in all 50 states, in what has become the biggest one-day literacy celebration in America. Dreier noted that last December, the President signed into law H.R. 1, a comprehensive education reform bill that promotes innovative approaches to literacy education. The fiscal year 2002 budget includes significant funding increases to support a new emphasis on literacy programs throughout the nation’s public schools.

“Providing local school districts with the resources and flexibility to effectively educate every child in America is a key component of H.R. 1,” said Dreier. “By setting clear goals and letting our teachers and parents work together with their local school boards, we will give every student a chance to get a good education.”
