Dreier Statement on Immigration Enforcement Training Program

February 24, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman David Dreier, Chairman of the House Rules Committee, made the following statement today in reaction to the signed agreement between the Department of Homeland Security and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on immigration detention training for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

"Interior immigration enforcement is a critical component of strengthening our national security. This program will provide our local law enforcement officials with the necessary skills to help execute the proper immigration procedures in detention facilities."

Under the agreement, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials will train Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department personnel to perform certain functions of federal immigration officers within the secure setting of the Los Angeles County jail facilities.
