HERSETH SANDLIN ANNOUNCES SERIES OF FARM BILL FORUMS DURING AUGUST

Events Slated for Kadoka, Arlington, Rapid City and Aberdeen to Discuss 2007 Farm Bill – Open to Public

August 7, 2007 - U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin today announced a series of Farm Bill Forums across the state to discuss the 2007 Farm Bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives prior to the August Congressional recess.

The meetings are scheduled for Kadoka, Arlington, Rapid City and Aberdeen. They are open to the public and the media. Full details can be found below.

Herseth Sandlin said, “The Farm Bill is the most important single piece of legislation affecting South Dakota. Ensuring that we have a Farm Bill that does right by South Dakota is critical not only to our farmers and ranchers, but to our entire state’s economy. I encourage and invite all South Dakotans to join me at these forums to learn more about the version of the Farm Bill that passed the House, and to offer suggestions as the bill moves through the legislative process this fall.”

Rep. Herseth Sandlin is a member of the House Agriculture Committee. In that role, she helped craft the 2007 Farm Bill in committee and led efforts on the House floor to protect the strong safety net for American agriculture it contains. The bill includes a number of amendments and provisions authored by Rep. Herseth Sandlin, including language to delay closure of FSA offices, increase rural broadband access, invest in cellulosic ethanol research and assist beginning farmers and ranchers. The bill also includes a framework agreement regarding country-of-origin labeling (COOL) that maintains the mandatory nature of the law, as well as a requirement that only animals born, raised and slaughtered in this country can receive a USA label.
