HERSETH SANDLIN ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION Winning Entrants Hail From Flandreau, North Sioux City May 16, 2007, Washington, D.C. – Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin today announced South Dakota’s winners of the 2007 congressional art competition, “An Artistic Discovery.” The first place artist is Steven Edwards, a junior at the Flandreau Indian School, for his piece titled “Gaze into the Plains.” The runner-up is Jordan Boose, a senior at Dakota Valley High School in North Sioux City, whose watercolor was untitled. Rep. Herseth Sandlin said, “It is abundantly clear that South Dakota has no shortage of young, talented artists. Every year, I am impressed by the beautiful and moving works of art that are entered in the congressional art competition and I thank all the South Dakotans who took the time to enter pieces. Steven’s and Jordan’s works stood out among a range of quality pieces and I am proud to select them for this honor.” An Artistic Discovery is the annual nationwide Congressional High School Art Competition initiated by members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Each spring, members sponsor a local art competition for high school students, judged by independent local art experts, in order to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talent in their districts. As the winning student from South Dakota, Steven will have his artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year and is invited to Washington, D.C., for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Jordan’s work will be displayed in Rep. Herseth Sandlin’s personal office in Washington, D.C.

She is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats committed to fiscal discipline and strong national security, and is co-chair of the Rural Working Group, which is dedicated to raising the profile of issues important to rural America. She also serves on three committees vital to South Dakota’s interests: Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs and Resources. In the 110th Congress, Herseth Sandlin was appointed to serve on the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. |
