HERSETH NAMED TO SELECT COMMITTEE ON ENERGY INDEPENDENCE AND GLOBAL WARMING Will Use Opportunity to Highlight Renewable Fuel’s Role in Establishing Energy Independence March 9, 2007 – Today, U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth was named to the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. She was one of only nine Democrats chosen to serve on the panel because of her recognized leadership role in the House on renewable energy and rural issues. Rep. Herseth will use her position on the committee to advocate for aggressive policies that support the development of domestic renewable energy, such as ethanol, biodiesel, and wind, and that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, strengthen our national security and benefit the environment. Herseth said, “America faces significant energy challenges and I will work to ensure that renewable fuels are an integral part of our energy picture in the years to come. The emergence of biofuels and ethanol present a unique opportunity to move our country in a new direction regarding where we get our energy and how our energy use affects the environment. As the only Blue Dog on this panel, I plan to be a forceful voice for South Dakota producers and all of rural America on this important debate. I am proud that the diverse composition of the committee will enable all viewpoints to shape our energy and climate policy going forward.” The Select Committee will hold hearings and investigations locally, nationally, and internationally to gather the information needed to restructure our national energy portfolio, to create economic opportunities, to enhance our national security and to protect the environment. It is charged with recommending to the Congress policies, strategies, technologies and other innovations to reduce the dependence of the United States on foreign sources of energy and address global climate change. In addition, the new Select Committee will raise the profile of these crucial issues in the Congress, the media, and the public eye. # # # Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth serves South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives. She is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats committed to fiscal discipline and strong national security, and is co-chair of the Rural Working Group, which is dedicated to raising the profile of issues important to rural America. She also serves on three committees vital to South Dakota’s interests: Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, Resources and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.
