The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has established an Internet-based Medicare provider/supplier enrollment process, known as Internet-based Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS). This new Medicare enrollment process will allow physicians and non-physician practitioners (except suppliers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS)) the option of enrolling, making a change in their Medicare enrollment information, or tracking the status of their Medicare enrollment applications throughout the enrollment process. CMS will phase-in the implementation of Internet-based PECOS. Today, physicians and non-physician practitioners practicing in the District of Columbia or one of the following States may use Internet-based PECOS: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. CMS will expand the availability of Internet-based PECOS for physicians and non-physician practitioners to all States over the next 2 months. In addition, CMS will make Internet-based PECOS available next year to all providers and suppliers (except DMEPOS suppliers). For additional information regarding Internet-based PECOS, go to the download section of this web page.
