FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 24, 2004, Sioux Falls, SD – Representative Stephanie Herseth expressed her support today for a deal negotiated in Tokyo to allow for the export of American beef into Japan. Japan had stopped accepting U.S. beef in December of 2003 after a BSE scare in Washington State. "This trade agreement is great news for South Dakota. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee and the Subcommittee on Livestock, I've worked to open new markets for our cattle producers, and make sure USDA is making smart decisions about releasing BSE results." Earlier this year, Herseth questioned Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman on USDA's handling of false positive BSE tests. Herseth noted that Japan, which bought $1.7 billion of U.S. beef in 2003, was the most lucrative foreign market for beef prior to Japan's decision to impose the ban. "Japan is a billion dollar market for beef, and this deal is great news for South Dakota producers." Herseth also noted that more work needs to be done. "We need to continue to expand foreign markets for beef, but also help our producers domestically. I'll continue to work to pass mandatory country of origin labeling and to fight for common sense trade policies that are good for South Dakota."
