FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SOUTH DAKOTA LAW ENFORCEMENT Bill Supports Funding to Fight Methamphetamines and Improve Health Conditions at Minnehaha County Jail July 8, 2004, Washington, DC – The U.S. House of Representatives today approved programs to fight methamphetamines in South Dakota and to improve health conditions in the Minnehaha County Jail, Representative Stephanie Herseth (SD-AL) announced. The programs are included as part of the Commerce, Justice and State Appropriations Bill for FY 2005, which provides funding for law enforcement programs. In a letter last month to Ranking Member Rep. Jose Serrano, Rep. Herseth requested inclusion of funding for South Dakota projects in the bill. “I’m pleased that the House supported my requests to fund these important law enforcement programs,” Rep. Herseth said. “We have a growing problem with meth abuse in our state, and today’s action will provide significant help to South Dakota’s effort to reduce the manufacture and traffic of this drug.” The bill supports funding: For the South Dakota Attorney General’s Campaign Against Methamphetamines, to reduce the manufacture, transportation and use of methamphetamines in South Dakota. It would aid efforts to monitor the purchase of equipment needed to manufacture methamphetamines; allow for the purchase of equipment needed to safely dispose of clandestine labs; update computer systems; hire personnel; and pay for testing of methamphetamines seized in investigations. To significantly improve the health and safety of the inmates and staff at the Minnehaha County Jail. The funds would allow the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office to purchase equipment that would prevent the transmission of disease. Herseth said, “This bill will help to preserve South Dakota’s wonderfully safe quality of life by bolstering our law enforcement’s efforts to fight methamphetamines. Additionally, the resources for improving the health conditions at Minnehaha County Jail will help to continue the jail’s safe and efficient operation. These are important law enforcement priorities for South Dakota, and I am pleased that they were included in the bill that passed the House today.” # # #
