Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that Kelly A. Zalocusky of Belleville, who is a student at Belleville East High School, was named a 2005 Presidential Scholar.
The Presidential Scholar Program was established in 1964 to honor academic achievement and to recognize students who demonstrate an exceptional talent in the visual, literary and performing arts. The scholars are honored for their accomplishments at the program's national celebration that will be held June 25-28 in Washington DC.
Since1983, each Presidential Scholar has invited his or her most inspirational teacher to travel to Washington DC to also participate in recognition events. Philip Short of Shiloh, Illinois was named the most influential teacher.
Costello said that "Presidential Scholars are honored for their accomplishments in academics, as well as their leadership skills and civic contributions to the area. It is truly an honor to announce that one of the scholars representing Illinois is from our area."
