Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) today applauded House approval of H.R. 3, the final version of legislation to reauthorize the nation's highway and transit systems. The $286.4 billion dollar bill will result in a significant increase in highway spending for the State of Illinois, an average of $309.15 million annually, or 33.4% per year over the current level of funding. In addition, Illinois will receive a $532 million increase in transit funding over the next five years. Costello also secured $150 million for the new Mississippi River Bridge, bringing total funding in the bill for the project to $240 million.
"This is a great bill for Illinois and I am glad to bring this process to a close," Costello said. "In addition to the large increase in the State's annual funding, we have secured funds for the new Mississippi River Bridge and many local projects. I want to thank the entire Bi-State Congressional delegation for their work on this legislation. It is another testament to what we can accomplish when we work together."
The bill also includes $40 million for road and infrastructure projects in the Mississippi Delta region, including the lower 16 counties in Illinois. Costello has been a strong supporter of the Delta Regional Authority, the federal agency which will administer the funds.
